Definitely one of the best soba we have ever had. We needed to queue 15 minutes to get in and the queue seems to consist mainly of Japanese which is a good sign.

Many articles claim this store to be over 500 years old as the oldest soba store in Kyoto, though starting out as a confectionary store, it wasn't really until mid-edo era, early 1700s, that they started doing soba. The fat udon noodles in the nabedon are pretty good. The soba is good - not the best I've ever had, the machine-made touch is evident, but it's the standard by which other soba places should hope to compare against - it is good. The atmosphere with quiet servers shuffling around softly, the beautiful old wooden surrounds in a home built and extended in genuine Kyoto matchiya style architecture - it is the sense of place that makes this a nice place to have soba.
Great soba place, must visit while in Kyoto. This is the oldest restaurant in Japan (est. 1465)
There's no one around 4 p.m. where you can eat the 550-year-old Soba. The taste is good.
A unique soba tasting experience. Noodles are not choppy like the store noodles. Always busy, since this place was visited by former emperor of Japan. They take reservations so I highly recommend to do so in advance.
