Amazing experience. Its like walking on Mars. This is not your typical hike. Be sure you check the forecast. Bring plenty of water. I suggest doing some of the other trails first to get an idea of what this may be like.

Amazing for sunrise hike. Like others said it exhausting. 8-9 hours to hike from Visitors Center to the summit and back down. Wear lots of sunscreen, UV rays are super powerful at this altitude. Also bring plenty water. The air up here makes it harder to breath as well. We started at Visitors Center at 05:15 AM and got back at 2:45pm, including breaks. Enjoy
Good workout (avg 15% grade), pretty good but not stunning views or scenery, too bad the last part of the hike is on the paved road.
Super easy trail. Shouldn't take more than two hours. I recommend carrying beer with to celebrate at the summit.
I remember when I tried to summit this this Mauna. I got altitude sick and had to turn around 30 minutes from the summit. I meant to try again before I moved away, but I never had the chance. Some day. I loved the views from the trail, it felt like I was on mars. The air was so crisp from the high altitude, and I could see Venus to the East. It was very memorable! Also steep.
Breathtaking
1st time above 12000' not in an Airplane. Physically exhausting takes every bit of the 8 hours that they describe to go up and come back down. Take plenty of water And you're ready to make it to the top for some of the best views in Hawaii .
Arnotts Adventures Provided Transport for a group of very fit Hikers who took this trail from the Mauna Kea Visitor Center to the Summit area, where I picked them up. It was a fly in fly out hike....professional Group.
