The Bournemouth Natural Science Society (BNSS) is a registered charity whose aims have little changed since its formation in 1903: to promote study, interest and enjoyment in all branches of the Natural Sciences and History. The Society runs an extensive programme of events throughout the year, including lectures most Tuesdays and Saturdays, museum open days, exhibitions, field meetings, study groups, cultural visits and social activities. In January 2016, we were awarded Credited Museum status by the Arts Council England. Our museum, located on the outskirts of Bournemouth town centre in a late Victorian Grade II listed building, houses natural history specimens of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, eggs, and shells, as well as fossils, rocks and minerals - including rare dinosaur footprints. The museum is also home to numerous archaeological artefacts and an Egyptology collection including many pre-dynastic artefacts and an Egyptian mummy dating to 700BC. The grounds of the building feature a marvellous garden aimed at encouraging wildlife in an urban environment. The BNSS is staffed entirely by volunteers who are expert in their particular natural science speciality, and who are on hand to talk to visitors about the collections. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds who have an interest in the natural sciences and history; we have a proven track record in mentoring people of all ages and developing their knowledge and skills of history, science and museum curation.
