The California Department of Motor Vehicle’s vision is to be a recognized leader in public service. To accomplish this vision our mission is to serve the public by providing quality licensing and motor vehicle-related services. The two functions of the DMV that most people are familiar with are registering vehicles and licensing their drivers. There are approximately 33 million registered vehicles in California with 23 million licensed drivers. California DMV registers vehicles in California and licenses their drivers. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is driven to make the Golden State's roads a better place to travel. Formed by the Vehicle Act of 1915, the agency focuses on registering vehicles, as well as licensing drivers for the state. The DMV also provides services such as offering identification cards, maintaining driving records, investigating complaints, regulating auto repair, dealerships, dismantlers, and sales staff; and licensing driving schools and instructors. The agency has registered about 33 million vehicles and licensed and 23 million drivers. DMV takes in about $6.5 billion in revenues each year.
