The CRD works collaboratively with First Nations and other levels of governments and has a direct relationship with individuals, businesses, organizations and institutions that access regional utilities and services and with communities that collaborate for regional services on behalf of their residents. Capital Regional District operates as the regional government for the municipalities and electoral areas located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The District provides regional governance and services that includes regional parks, regional planning, solid waste management and emergency services. The Capital Regional District (CRD) is the regional government for 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the nearby Gulf Islands, serving more than 377,000 citizens.Governed by a 24-member Board of Directors and supported by more than 75 committees and commissions, the CRD was incorporated in 1966 to provide regional decision-making on issues that transcend municipal boundaries. It is administered by the Chief Administrative Officer and an executive team of other officers appointed by the Board who are delegated various responsibilities and authorities.As a local government and shared services provider, the CRD develops partnerships to facilitate and deliver projects and services that benefit municipalities, electoral areas, First Nations and the region as a whole.
