The ISRI gives Foothill students the opportunity to receive Independent Study credit by engaging in a research project of their own design in a field of their choice, with the support and guidance of ISRI staff, mentors, campus department partners, and Foothill faculty members. Participation as a researcher includes designing a research project, submitting a pitch, working with a staff advisor as the study progresses, and the guaranteed opportunity to publish with the ISRI! As a researcher, a student can choose to participate for as little as one quarter up to the full school year, publishing periodic updates on their progress to meet Independent Study credit and program requirements. Not only can students get hands-on work experience that will set them apart as a job or transfer applicant, but they can develop and perfect advanced academic writing skills that will be vital in their career or upper-division university courses. Research projects can be conducted individually or as a team. This platform provides a prime starting point to submit research for the yearly Bay Honors Consortium Honors Research Symposium. Participants can also present at Foothill’s annual end-of-year Research and Service Leadership Symposium. Additionally, Honors students and experienced researchers are encouraged to join the program as mentors, to be paired with a student in a related field looking for advice, guidance, and feedback on their research project and process. The ISRI provides infrastructure support, student advising, and faculty guidance. The ISRI is dedicated to inclusivity for researchers of all levels, from students that have a project that's ready to go or a student who wants to do research, but doesn't know where to begin. The ISRI fully supports diversity, student success, and service leadership across Foothill College.
