The aim of research at Helmholtz Zentrum München is to attain an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of diabetes, chronic lung diseases and allergies. To achieve this objective, the Center seeks to develop personalized approaches for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Through a close network of basic and translational research and technology-driven discoveries, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues a comprehensive research approach. Thus, research contributions can also be made to other disease areas, and the development of personalized medicine can be promoted. The 56 scientific institutes and independent research units comprise a network linking the various programs and research topics. In order to translate basic research into medical applications, researchers of Helmholtz Zentrum München collaborate closely in translational research centers and clinical cooperations with medical partners in universities and hospitals as well as with industry. Helmholtz Zentrum München employs around 2300 people from around 70 nations and is headquartered in the north of Munich. It is a research institution of the German Federal Government and the Free State of Bavaria and member of Germany‘s largest scientific organization, the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. Furthermore, Helmholtz Zentrum München participates in all six German Centres for Health Research, with leading function in the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).
