Our Mission The Houston Zoo connects communities with animals, inspiring action to save wildlife. Our Vision The Houston Zoo will be a leader in the global movement to save wildlife. The Houston Zoo is made up of many moving parts. We have over 6,000 permanent residents (our animals) for whom we provide housing, meals, medical care and, yes, even education! There are over 2 million guests each year who come to experience our incredible variety of animals and ecosystems, as well as attend special private and public events and entertainment. Our dedicated staff works around the clock to ensure that the Zoo is always running smoothly for the safety and well being of our residents and guests. Membership Organizations Nec Houston Zoo, Inc. operates as non-profit organization. The Organization offers the exhibition and tours of animals, as well as it provides education, guest services, conservation efforts, field trips, scholarships, summer programs, wild life speakers, zoo sleep overs, and other similar services. Houston Zoo serves communities in the United States. The Houston Zoo is made up of many moving parts. For getting down to earth in Space City, there's nothing like the Houston Zoo. The not-for-profit zoo occupies 55-acres in Hermann Park at the heart of Houston's cultural district. It is home to more than 4,500 animals from about 800 species and hosts about 1.5 million visitors per year. Facilities include the McGovern Children's Zoo, Kipp Aquarium, the tropical bird house, Texas Wetlands, and the Wildlife Carousel. The zoo participates in programs that oversee the breeding of more than 40 endangered animal species. Several of its facilities may be reserved for private functions and private tours are offered "behind the scenes." The Houston Zoo was founded in 1922 to house a bison donated by the US government.
