The ultimate aim of this community initiative is to get litter off the ground (and out of trees, hedges, and waterways!), either by directly removing it or—preferably—by preventing it from being discarded in the first place. We recognise that littering is a complex subject, encompassing psychology and human behaviour, cultural attitudes and norms, and the urban binfrastructure. To tackle such an issue, a multipronged approach is needed: cleaning up, education, and projects. To this end, Off the Ground: + Runs regular community clean ups in local parks; hundreds of bags of rubbish and recycling have been collected over the past several years. + Launched "Where's Your Patch?" to encourage residents to take responsibility for their community. + Developed the Love Chippenham campaign (www.lovechippenham.org) that encompassed novel interventions such as the Residential Bin Scheme and neighbourhood chalk trails, bespoke posters for businesses, and a game to inspire pride in the community. + Brought the Refill campaign to Chippenham to help reduce plastic bottle waste.
