OrphanCare is a non-profit organisation that advocates and works to give children who are in institutions and newborn babies the opportunity to grow up in the care of a loving family. Our work focuses on ending the institutionalisation of children and transitioning institutions into family and community based care. We do this by working with children’s homes and institutions to: • Advocate and, where possible, facilitate the reintegration of children with their birth parents or relatives; • Facilitating legal adoption for children who are not able to grow up with their biological families; • Raising awareness and educating donors about the risk of institutionalisation; • Creating resources and promoting a community of practice; • Promoting the creation of a fostering system in Malaysia. We also provide community services to raise awareness and offer alternatives and support to birth mothers in crisis. This includes: • Baby hatch program to rescue babies; • Counselling and referral support for pregnant women and girls; • Shelter for pregnant women and girls; • Facilitating the legal adoption of babies placed with us; • Awareness and education activities including on reproductive health and avoiding cases of statelessness and undocumented children. We work closely with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the Department of Social Welfare and partner with Lumos, an international non-profit organisation that advises countries worldwide about deinstitutionalisation, to promote and implement the transition from institutional care to family based care.
