Vivarail was born in 2015 with three key aims: - To produce low cost, low maintenance rolling stock - To develop systems and designs that would make use of emerging technologies - To bring innovative and smart ideas that benefit passengers, staff, the environment and the wider rail industry In four years Vivarail has grown from start-up to full train manufacturer: - Fully approved 3-car DEMU that has been in mainline passenger use - Soon-to-be-approved 2-car battery train that will be used as a demonstrator vehicle - Received the first order to build 3 x 2-car trains for the Marston Vale line, due for introduction to service in December 2018 - Created 50+ new jobs - Expanded premises at the Quinton Rail Technology Centre - Opened a new factory at Seaham - Developed and patented a range of systems Vivarail has designed and built a train that can be used now and in the future: - All power modules are inter-changeable so a train built with a diesel engine can be changed to batteries or fuel cells - Trains can run as hybrids so a battery train can house supplementary diesel engines as a fail-safe - The Automatic Charging Point allows battery trains to run on non-electrified lines - Designs are underway for Vivarail’s next generation of new-build trains which will use the same power systems as the Class 230 – the modules mean all Vivarail trains can take advantage of new technologies as they emerge
