World Water Relief (WWR) installs water filtration systems for safe drinking water, improves sanitation facilities and educates students about the importance of proper hygiene through our “WASH (water, sanitation & hygiene) in Schools” program. WWR works “bottom up”- at the school level – to influence change in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. WWR began in 2009 as an effort to provide impoverished migrant worker communities in the Dominican Republic access to quality potable water. Necessity prompted mission expansion into Haiti as we responded to the devastating earthquake in 2010, the Haitian cholera epidemic and the ongoing need to empower a healthier generation of Haitian and Dominican youth. Our projects are focused on schools and an orphanage. We focus on children because they are especially vulnerable to the impacts of poor sanitation, water and hygiene. When kids are unhealthy, they often miss school and therefore fall behind and lack a proper education. Focusing on children also provides an opportunity to alleviate the inequity of access to water. We are committed to all of our projects for 10-years. This includes maintenance, repairs, training and hygiene education. During this time, the schools and communities are empowered and trained to assume full responsibility for continuing the project on their own after our tenure. Since our inception, WWR has implemented 35 school projects providing safe water to almost 60,000 people a year. This not only includes students, but their teachers, families and communities. Our current project list consists of 19 schools spread out between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
