hearth.earth is a self-funded freelance GIS and design platform started by Ross Hammes in 2018 while earning his Masters at Virginia Tech. Projects typically focus on community planning, cartographic design & interactive mapping, geospatial modeling & environmental analysis, and architectural design. This startup company aims to grow and expand beyond the New River & Roanoke Valleys of Western VA as well as far Southwest VA in the Heart of Appalachia where the projects have primarily covered thus far. The organization is structured in the following way stemming from "Hearth", the company's root name: 1. heart- the heart of the company includes the mission, vision, goals, historical timeline, and team. Currently, the team consists of only myself and my geo-dog, ESRI (environmental systems research). This is where you can find more information specific to the organization itself, including any news coverage and awards. 2. hearth- the hearth is the community surrounding the heart's home, the hearth is where the region and community can come together and plan for a more sustainable future together, where every voice is considered and explored. At hearth.earth we know that we are apart of a larger community that goes beyond our backyards or neighbors, but rather a region of people without political boundaries that aim to overcome challenges by using high spatial and temporal data to make informed decisions. In human geography, a cultural hearth is "where new ideas and innovations spring up and spread to other areas of the world." At hearth.earth, we fully intend on helping create the spark that will light the way to a brighter tomorrow. 3. earth- the earth is the only home we have and we must protect it, therefore every project we focus on aims to only better the environment or at least refrain from harming it in any way. It is important to leave all bias or personal endeavors behind to make the correct decisions that aim to keep this a planet full of life.
